Project Description
DESCRIPTION OF THE FACULTY
The new Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science has been created out of the former Faculty of Mathematics Physics and Chemistry. The new Faculty comprises two Institutes: the Institute of Mathematics and the Institute of Computer Science, located in two separate buildings. The Faculty employs more than one hundred scientists whose main activity has been research. It is an internationally recognized center of mathematics and computer science with its traditions tracing back to the Lwów school of mathematics. The mathematical library is the second largest in Poland and the local computer networks are modern and connected to the Internet. The Editorial Boards of two international mathematical journals are located at the Institute of Mathematics and also a number of our Faculty members belong to editorial boards of some other international mathematical journals. Members of the Faculty often visit departments of mathematics and computer science abroad including the most prestigious, such as Princeton University, Cornell University, Paris VI, Orsay, Bonn, etc.).
The Faculty organizes on an average three international conferences in various fields of mathematics and computer science each year. We host approximately 15-20 mathematicians and computer scientists from the EU and the USA a year. A group of 12 mathematicians working in harmonic analysis takes part in the program "Fourier Analysis" in the framework of the Human Capital and Mobility Program together with universities in Geneva, Torino, Nancy, Madrid, Edinburgh, and Goeteborg.
The Institute of Mathematics has received a top ranking of the KBN ( a central body which qualifies all research institutions in Poland according to their scientific achievements).
FACULTY EDUCATIONAL PLANS
Following a decision made by the authorities of the University of Wroc³aw, the University started reforming its educational system. One of the recent results of this reform is the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science created in September 1996. This Faculty has begun its structural changes of teaching of mathematics and computer science in accordance with the Faculty Development Plan signed by the Dean of the Faculty.
It is stated in this plan that in the nearest future the Faculty would like to:
a) transform Master's degree courses into Bachelor's degree
courses with an opportunity of
possible continuation towards Master's and Ph.D degrees;
b) develop appropriate curricula for new courses in mathematics and computer science combined with elements of either social science or/and insurance mathematics or/and mathematics in economy or/and practical computer science,
c) introduce a new credit
transfer point system compatible with ETCS.
THE BODY AND MANAGEMENT OF THE PROJECT
The running Joint European Project (JEP) is contracted
under Tempus Phare No S_JEP- 12266-97 from
December 15, 1997 to December 14, 2000. It consists
of the Revised Budgets and Annual Reports for
each contracted year prepared by the Contractor, Coordinator
and Associate Coordinators. The Revised
Budgets for 97/98,
98/99
and 99/00 are available, also the
Annual
Report 97/98 and Annual Report
98/99 has already been prepared.
The Contractor of this project is Professor Klaus Buchner from TU Munich..
The Coordinator of this project is Professor Andrzej Hulanicki from Wroc³aw University.
The Associate Coordinators of this project :
Prof Krzysztof Stempak (resigned after one year to move to the Technical University of Wroc³aw)
Dr hab Ryszard Szekli from Wroc³aw University
Prof Ewa Damek coordinates the preparation of the new curricula and syllabi for the reformed educational system.
Dr Jerzy
Marcinkowski is responsible for the
realization of the planned outcomes at the Institute of
Computer Science.
Mrs. Ilona Ciechanowska, MSc is the secretary of this project.
Each Revised Budget contains the detailed outcomes planned for realization in one year, including needed mobilities, purchase of equipment and teaching materials and additional costs.
The people managing this project are not paid from the Tempus funds, except for the secretary.
